DESCRIPTION:  AT 10,023 FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL HALAEKALA IS THE THIRD HIGHEST VOLCANO IN HAWAII (#1: MAUNA KEA @ 13,796 FT; #2: MAUNA LOA @ 13,679 FT).

FROM THE SUMMIT TWO MAIN TRAILS LEAD DOWN INTO THE CRATER: KEONEHE'EHE'E & HALEMAU'U. THE KEONEHE'EHE'E (SLIDING SANDS) TRAIL PASSES THROUGH TWO CABINS: KAPALAOA & PALIKU. SEVERAL SPUR TRAILS BRANCH OFF SLIDING SANDS, INCLUDING ONE WHICH ENCIRCLES THE KA LU'U O KA 'O'O CINDER CONE, HOWEVER A MAJORITY OF THESE TRAILS END UP LOOPING THE PARALLEL HALEMAU'U TRAIL.

THE SLIDING SANDS VARIATION OUTLINED HERE BEGINS AT THE SUMMIT TRAILHEAD, LOSES 3431 FT, AND TERMINATES AT THE PALIKU CABIN. PALIKU CAN ALSO BE REACHED VIA THE KAUPO TRAIL WHICH ASCENDS 5340 FT FROM ITS TRAILHEAD.
