DESCRIPTION:  NAMED AFTER A SINGLE TREE THAT RESIDES ON THE TRAIL, HALAPEPE NUI IS A COUNTERCLOCKWISE LOOP THAT BRANCHES OFF THE WAIAU RIDGE TRAIL.

THERE ARE THREE VARIATIONS TO THE HALAPEPE NUI TRAIL DEPENDING ON THE TRAILHEAD USED TO GET ON THE WAIAU RIDGE TRAIL: HAPAKI, KAAHELE, AND KAAHUMANU. THE APPROACH OUTLINED HERE USES THE POPULAR HAPAKI ST. TRAILHEAD.

NUMEROUS SIDE TRAILS AND UNEXPECTED JUNCTIONS MAKES THIS MEANDERING LOOP DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW EVEN WITH WELL PLACED MARKERS. WHILE ON THE WAIAU RIDGE TRAIL THE HALAPEPE NUI JUNCTION CAN BE FOUND TO YOUR LEFT SHORTLY AFTER REACHING THE KAAHUMANU JUNCTION. ALSO LOOK TO THE LEFT FOR ANOTHER CRITICAL JUNCTION ON THE LOOPS RETURN PATH SHORTLY AFTER DESCENDING A DISTINGUISHABLE EXTENDED ROW OF TREES. ALONG THE HALAPEPE NUI TRAIL VIEWS OF PEARL HARBOR AND THE ENTIRE WAIANAE MOUNTAIN RANGE CAN BE SEEN.
