DESCRIPTION:  MAKUA VALLEY IS A MILITARY RESERVATION USED BY THE US ARMY FOR INFANTRY AND ARTILLERY TRAINING. THE RESERVATION ACTUALLY ENCOMPASSES THREE VALLEYS: KAHANAHAIKI, MAKUA KEAAU, AND MAKUA PROPER.

THE ENTIRE LOOP TRAIL IS A TREK ON A DIRT ROAD THAT OFFERS A UNIQUE VIEW OF THE BORDERING WAIANAE RANGE.  THERE ARE A FEW SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC HAWAIIAN SITES WORTH NOTING ALONG THE TRAIL INCLUDING A FRESH WATER WELL, PETROGLYPHS, AND BOWL SHAPED DEPRESSIONS IN ROCKS USED TO EVAPORATE SEA WATER TO CREATE SALT.

MAKUA VALLEY IS RELATIVELY UNTOUCHED, HOWEVER, THE CONTROVERSIAL FIRING OF LIVE MUNITIONS INTO THE VALLEY IS SAID TO BE A THREAT TO NATIVE PLANTS IN THE AREA.
