DESCRIPTION:  PU'U O KONA IS THE PEAK ALONG THE KOOLAU CREST THAT CAN BE SEEN DIRECTLY WEST OF THE KULIOUOU TRAIL TERMINUS. ALTHOUGH PU'U O KONA CAN EASILY BE REACHED WITH A SHORT TRAVERSAL FROM THAT TERMINUS THE PU'U O KONA TRAIL IS A LOOP THAT ENVELOPES KULIOUOU RIDGE AND CAN EITHER BE DONE IN A CLOCK OR COUNTER-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION.

THE CLOCKWISE VARIATION BEGINS AT THE BOARD OF WATER SUUPLY TRAILHEAD FOR KULIOUOU AND FOLLOWS THE ROAD TO THE LEFT TO ASCEND THE WEST-FACING RIDGE PARALLEL TO KULIOUOU. THE TRAIL CONTINUES UP THIS RIDGE TO THE KOOLAU SUMMIT WHERE AN EASTWARD TRAVERSAL TO PU'U O KONA BEGINS. THE TRAVERSAL ACROSS THE KOOLAU CREST INTERSECTS PU'U O KONA, THE KULIOUOU TERMINUS, AND 3-POWER LINE POLES WHERE THE TRAIL BEGINS TO RAPIDLY DESCEND THE EAST-FACING RIDGE PARALLEL TO KULIOUOU EVENTUALLY COMPLETING THE LOOP AT THE KULIOUOU TRAILHEAD.

POOR WEATHER CAN ADD ADDITIONAL RISK AS THERE ARE A FEW NARROW AND ROPED AREAS.
